"Maid" sheds some light on several truths about domestic abuse

Updated: Dec 3, 2023

I have been in an abusive relationship myself. So, when I watched "Maid", the Netflix TV Show, I was struck by how realistically it depicts what is domestic abuse. If you too have been in a toxic relationship, felt like you were swallowed by everything around you, you should probably read this...

For those who haven't watched it (and I suggest you do), "Maid" is a TV series that follows the story of Alex, a young mother escaping an abusive relationship with her daughter. The series explores the challenges she faces in trying to build a better life, including financial hardships and navigating the welfare system.

The "couch scene"

"It's like she completely alienated herself, that her soul disappears. Till she feels like nothing and life is not worth living."

Here are 10 key highlights that make the show a realistic portrayal of domestic violence:

  1. The Complexity of Domestic Violence: The series portrays domestic violence as a complex and multifaceted issue. It's not just physical abuse; it can also involve emotional, psychological, and financial abuse. Alex's journey demonstrates how these forms of abuse are interconnected and can be equally damaging.

  2. Cycle of Abuse: "Maid" illustrates the cycle of abuse, where moments of violence are often followed by apologies and promises of change from the abuser. This cycle can make it difficult for survivors to break free from abusive relationships.

  3. Isolation and Control: Abusers often isolate their victims from friends and family, making it harder for them to seek help. In the show, Alex's ex-partner uses isolation and control as tactics to maintain power and control over her.

  4. Economic Abuse: Economic abuse is a central theme in the series. Alex faces significant financial hardship as a result of her ex-partner's control over their finances. This aspect of abuse can trap survivors in dangerous situations, as they may lack the resources to leave.

  5. Impact on Children: "Maid" emphasises how domestic violence affects children who witness it. Alex's daughter, Maddy, is deeply affected by the violence and instability in their lives. The show highlights the long-term consequences of growing up in an abusive environment.

  6. Barriers to Leaving: The series portrays the numerous barriers that survivors face when trying to leave an abusive relationship. These barriers include fear, lack of financial resources, limited support networks, and the legal system's complexities.

  7. Stigmatisation and Shame: Alex experiences shame and stigma from society, even when she does reach out for help. This reflects the societal attitudes and misconceptions that often surround domestic violence victims.

  8. Strength and Resilience: Alex demonstrates incredible strength and resilience despite the challenges she faces. Her determination to create a better life for herself and her daughter is a testament to the inner power many survivors of domestic violence possess.

  9. Importance of Support: The series underscores the importance of having a support system, whether it's through friends, family, or organisations dedicated to helping survivors. These networks can provide crucial assistance and emotional support.

  10. Long Recovery Process: "Maid" also highlights that recovery from domestic violence is a long and challenging process. Even after leaving the abusive relationship, survivors may continue to grapple with the trauma and its effects.
